I see and hear similar issues from my sister in law. Part of what I observe is that families want to support ALL of their child's interests. Perhaps the key is budgeting their time, like we do our money, to prioritize fewer extra-curricular activities and prioritize the one's that have the "biggest bang for the buck" and/or meet the social-emotional needs of the family. Also, doesn't anyone car pool anymore?!!!

Hi Donna:

Very interesting blog- A new school year. Thanks for the reminder, because as parents some of us do get caught up in the back to school shopping moment and neglect to prepare our children emotionally for the challenges they will encounter once they head back to school. There are many who worry about their child's /children first day and are more stressed out than their kids, because they fail to sit their child/children down and reassure them, that it's normal and okay to feel timid and scared and they will get over it. Every body experiences fear sometime.

John, unfortunately you are probably correct; let us hope that his parent's lack of action motivates the rest of us to do what we should and what we must!!

You hit the nail on the head Donna, although I have a feeling that his parents were (at best) out to lunch, and any appeal to them would have fallen on deaf ears.
